Lose your only key in Elko, or Ely, or somewhere in the middle of Wyoming, and you find out fast how few locksmiths there actually are. The local shop is closed, booked, or does not program keys. I load the van and drive.
There are enormous stretches of the west with no locksmith inside two hours, and the ones that exist mostly cut house keys. Modern car keys need a programmer, a subscription to the data, and somebody who knows the make. Out there, that person often does not exist at all.
The key that went into a lake, a snowbank or three hundred acres of sagebrush. Your truck is fine, it just cannot be started, and it is four hours from a dealership.
A rig down four states from home is a real bill every day it sits. A locksmith who will drive out is almost always cheaper than the tow plus the downtime.

And the honest part: sometimes driving out is the wrong answer for you, and I will say so. If there is a good locksmith an hour from where you are, that is a better call than five hours from Grantsville, and I would rather tell you that than take the job.
